KRL on winning spree, KPT falter again in PPFL

KARACHI: Karachi Port Trust’s (KPT) new coach Mohammad Asif can’t seem to get the results while defending champions Khan Research Laboratories just can’t stop winning.

KPT lost 2-1 to Pakistan Navy in their Pakistan Premier Football League match on Thursday for their third defeat in four games while KRL made it four wins out of four when they defeated Pakistan Air Force 2-1.

In Thursday’s other matches, National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) played out a 1-1 draw with Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) while the game between Baloch FC and Muslim FC ended in a goalless draw.

At the KPT Stadium here, the host failed to build on their 1-0 win over PIA in the previous match as a first-half blitz by Navy’s Sajjad Ahmed put them on course for another defeat.

Sajjad opened the scoring in the 15th minute before doubling his tally — and his team’s lead — three minutes later. A goal by Mohammad Adnan in the 67th gave Navy a double over their opponents after they beat them in the season opener 2-1.

In Rawalpindi, KRL kept their perfect record intact at their own KRL Football Stadium and already the defending champions look the best bet for retaining their title.

With the two teams having already played each other on the opening day of the season when KRL triumphed 2-1, PAF took an early lead when Irfan Ali scored in the 13th but goals by Yasir Afridi in the 61st and Pakistan international midfielder Mahmood Khan seven minutes later gave KRL all three points once again.

At the Korangi Baloch Ground here, undefeated NBP played their third straight draw in the league with Nasir Ismail’s charges still showing signs that they haven’t gelled in yet.

Faisal Iqbal scored in the 46th minute to give the bankers the lead but PIA equalised in the 62nd through Imran Khan.

Elsewhere, Mohammad Ibrahim impressed as Baloch FC held on for a draw against Muslim FC at the Noushki Football Stadium.

Friday’s fixtures: KESC v HBL (KPT Football Stadium, Karachi), PMC Athletico v Wapda (PMC Football Ground, Faisalabad).
