AJK LA-30 repolling declared void

GUJRANWALA, Dec 27: The Azad Jammu and Kashmir election tribunal on Friday declared the repolling of the LA-30 (Jammu-11) Gujranwala void.

The legislation assembly elections were held in July 2002 while the Election Commission had declared All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference aspirant Chaudhry Muhammad Ismael successful. But the loosing PPP candidate Chaudhry Maqbool Ahmad moved the EC with the plea for repolling. Later, he was declared successful after repolling.

Chaudhry Ismael then filed a petition before the election tribunal and pleaded that the EC had no authority to order for repolling without declaring the entire election void. Accepting his plea, the election tribunal comprising Muzaffarabad district and sessions judge Syed Nisar Shah declared Chaudhry Ismael successful after a debate.

SENT TO JAIL: PPP city president Chaudhry Khalid Hum-ayun’s killers Kashif Siddique and Asif Siddique were sent to jail on judicial remand by an Anti-Terrorism Court here on Friday.

The accused brothers and their accomplices had shot dead the PPP leader along with his two guards over a murder enmity some one and-a-half-month ago on the Sheikhupura Road. After committing the crime they fled Iran. Later, police arrested them from Quetta when they returned from Iran.

HEARING: An ehtesab court on Friday continued hearing of the corruption case against former federal minister Rana Nazir Ahmad and adjourned the hearing till Jan 8, 2003.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had caught the former federal minister on the charge of making assets of Rs46 million illegally. Later, he was bailed out by the Supreme Court while his appeal for transferring the case to another court was still pending with the Lahore High Court.

PTCL CENTRES: The Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) on Friday set up five centres in the city where new telephone connection (NTC) forms will be provided to subscribers free of cost.

This was stated by Gujranwala Telecom Region (GTR) general manager Muhammad Anwar here on Friday.

He warned that PTCL officials found involved in receiving price of NTC forms would be taken to task.

GCCI CONCERN: An executive council of the local chamber of commerce and industry expressed its discontent over the rising incidents of highway robberies between Lahore and Gujranwala.

This was stated by GCCI president Khwaja Tahir Hassan at a meeting held here on Thursday.

He said chamber’s senior vice-president Muhammad Akram Badshah was manhandled by highwaymen and also took away his four-wheeler near Kamoki when he was coming back from Lahore on Thursday.

The GCCI president said robbers had also looted an industrialist and son of former MPA S.A. Hameed and his mother a few months ago on the GT Road. The robbers had also injured the industrialist when he tried to resist.

He demanded that the police should adopt solid steps to check the robbery incidents on the highway between Lahore and Gujranwala.

PROTEST: Christian community protested against the attack on church and killing and injuring of innocent people on the eve of Christmas in Chianwali, Daska.

Talking to newsmen, Bishop Dr Rofan Julius and other leaders said the attack on church was a matter of concern for Christian community.

They demanded that the accused involved in the church attack should be arrested immediately.
