Kamra attack was assault on sovereignty, says PCNS

ISLAMABAD, Sept 7: The Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) has termed Kamra terror attack a conspiracy to destabilise the country and asked the Pakistan Air Force to beef up security of its bases.

Defence Secretary Lt-Gen (retd) Asif Yasin Malik and Commander of Kamra base Air Commodore Muhammad Azam on Friday briefed the 14-member PCNS on the Aug 16 terrorist attack on Minhas Airbase, Kamra. The attack claimed the lives of two PAF personnel, besides causing material damage. All the assailants were killed.

The committee was told that nine terrorists had carried out the attack, three of them belonging to Punjab. One of the identified assailants hailed from Sialkot.

The two officials also informed the meeting about the security measures taken recently to protect PAF installations across the country, especially in and around Kamra.

PCNS chairman Senator Mian Raza Rabbani said the terrorists had attacked the country’s sovereignty and not just a PAF airbase. The attack served to highlight the need for enhancing security measures at all military installations.

The PCNS also asked the defence ministry and the PAF to inform it of any additional expenses to be incurred on beefing up security at strategic installations.
