PESHAWAR, Sept 4: Five members of a family, including three children, were killed when roof of an old building caved in at Sethian street in Peshawar city on Tuesday.

The deceased were identified as Meraj Gul, his wife and their three children, Ismail (5), Naila (14) and Salman (3), while three children, including Bilal, Sidra and Ajmal got minor injuries.

Residents said that Mr Gul was a daily wager and the building they were living in was very old while the recent rains had further weakened its structure. The incident, they said, took place in the small hours of Tuesday and local people, Rescue 1122 officials and workers of Al-Khidmat Foundation retrieved the bodies from the debris.

An official of Yakatoot police station said that the family was living on rent for past few years in the building located in a narrow street.

Peshawar district coordination officer Javaid Marwat told media persons that the administration had already advised the residents of old buildings to vacate them and shift to safer places, but they were not ready to do so.

He said that all old buildings in the city had been declared dangerous for living.
