Asad steals riding honours at Karachi races

KARACHI, Sept 2: Riding boy Asad Aksir shone in the saddle by storming to a back-to-back double as the programme was marred by cancellation of a race at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

Asad opened his campaign when he galloped outsider filly Poonam to a five-length victory over favourite filly Reach The Heights to land the opener.

The triumph helped Poonam make amends for last week’s loss to Gallant Act in The KRC Chairman Cup.

Sher Dil finished third nine lengths behind while Stall Wart Fighter was placed fourth finishing a further four-and-a-half lengths away among six starters.

The rider of public fancy Reach The Heights, Zaki Zakir, was suspended till further enquiry. It was only the second run of Reach the Heights who made his debut six months back.

Picking up from where he had left, Aksir powered co-favourite filly Jungle De Malka to a spectacular six-length success to win the next race, top division of class VII, which was also day’s feature event.

The victorious horse beat Mr Khan for the honours as co-favourite Lolly For Dolly finished third followed by Salman Gold.

Making his third run second, favourite colt Punter’s Dream created quite a stir sprinting to three-quarter-of-a-length victory over favourite filly Delightful Diva under rider S. Khan to clinch the third race.

Bay horse Big Joy obliged all and sundry by getting the better of Concept by five lengths among 10 runners to claim the fourth race.

Colt Hit The Target was on song when he beat filly Jal Pari by four-and-a-half lengths to clinch the sixth and concluding race which was restricted to unknown pedigree horses.

Earlier, the KRC Stewards cancelled the fifth race following a false start.
