Respect for constitution

Published August 30, 2012

IN 1962, President Ayub Khan’s government gave a constitution to Pakistan. This was probably a disputed document, but this is not my point here. While he quit power in 1969, he himself disregarded his own constitution and did not hand over power according to the provision of the constitution.

It shows that something is fundamentally wrong with us Pakistanis. We have some serious fault. We do not respect written words, covenants, and rules and regulations.

More than four decades have passed since the demise of Ayub Khan’s constitution. But nothing has changed. No improvements have come in our national psyche of bypassing laws, and rules and regulations. Rather, things have gone from bad to worse.

How can we claim to be democracy-loving people if we fail to show respect to documents, words and covenants?
