KARACHI, Aug 29: Participants in a meeting held at the Governor’s House on Wednesday decided that the newly established Sindh Medical University would be named Jinnah-Sindh Medical University and the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) would be its constituent hospital.

Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad chaired the meeting.

It was decided in the meeting that the National Institute of Child Health (NICH) and the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) would also be affiliated with the new university. Moreover, the Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan Institute of Oral Health presently working on the premises of the Sindh Medical College (SMC) would be shifted from there and continue to work under the Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS).

The governor on the occasion announced a special grant of Rs50 million for completing the initial work of the new medical university.

He said that it would be issued as a separate fund without any deduction from the funding of the DUHS.

Sindh Health Minister Dr Sagheer Ahmed, law secretary Ghulam Nabi Shah, health secretary Aftab Khatri, DUHS Vice Chancellor Prof Masood Hameed, Sindh Medical University Vice Chancellor Prof Tariq Rafi and other senior officers attended the meeting.—PPI
