It is believed that the lives of six innocent people including those of four brothers could have been saved if the police had taken initiative on a complaint filed earlier.
Also if the police had called the warring parties to the police station and tried patching up as the quarrel was over a petty issue.
According to police rules, the police should call both parties for a patch-up, when there is a conflict. If both parties fail to agree on the issue, then the police should register a case against the accused and arrest them.
Desperate to see the killer in jail, the relatives of the six victims staged a protest demonstration on Jhelum road, near Ayub Park on the second day of Eidul Fitr and demanded the police to arrest the killer and his accomplices who they alleged are being protected by influential people of the city.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Potohar Division, Haseeb Hussain Shah when contacted and asked about the arrest of the murderer and police investigation, replied that police is making efforts to arrest Waheed Qureshi.
He revealed: “The murderer had links with some influential people for whom he had been working, since they played a role in settling a murder case in which he was involved. They (the political people) used to provide him arms and protect him. His family was annoyed over his changing character and involvement in crimes. The victims (deceased brothers) used to ask him to give up his activities.”
The SP said: “It has also emerged that the main killer Waheed Qureshi was also jealous of his four relatives who were well settled in Kuwait.”
Meanwhile, the murder of three persons – Muhammad Shafiq alias Sheikh Papu, Sadaqat Khan alias Kala Khan and Muhshtaq Khan in Dhoke Elahi Baksh by their rivals on September 27, 2009 — and in retaliation to the triple-murder — the relatives of the victims took their revenge on November 12, 2011, when in a well-planned attack killed the three under-trial handcuffed prisoners along with a passer-by, outside the court room.
Chaudhry Shaukat Ali, his brother Chaudhry Arshad and their nephew Ghalib, facing the murder trial were gunned down outside the court room, where those who had been killed by their three rivals Mohammad Shafiq, Sadaqat Khan alias Kala Khan and Muhstaq Khan in Dhoke Elahi Baksh on September, 2009.
Panic and anger were the immediate reactions among the legal community who staged a protest outside the office of the City Police Office and demanded better security.
What was the role of the police who were guarding the under-trial prisoners as they had been declared as dangerous due to life threats from their rivals?
They didn’t open fire on the attackers nor were those policemen who were assigned to supervise the security duties found present there.
It may be recalled that an attempt to murder the three under-trial prisoners (Chaudhry Shaukat group) inside Adiala jail had been made by their rivals by smuggling weapons inside; the murder attempt was foiled by the jail authorities.
In this case, the situation was similar like Gulistan colony murder case, the police became a silent spectator as they could not take the matter seriously, when the first quarrel had taken place between the two parties of Dhoke Elahi Baksh. The tension between the two parties had started over a petty issue that led to the murder of three people.
