Plan to refurbish Shamsabad food street

RAWALPINDI, Aug 24: The City District Government Rawalpindi (CDGR) is going to refurbish Shamsabad food street, where traditional and continental cuisine will be offered to residents of garrison city.

The CDGR has invited the brains behind Lahore Food Street to make Shamsabad food street more spacious and attractive for the people.

At present, there are more than 20 food outlets at the street but because of space problem the visitors’ turnout remains low.

The team of experts visited the area during Ramazan and recommended to the CDGR to utilise more area around the stadium.“We will improve the food street within few months to provide people a better place to dine out,” said District Coordination Officer Saqib Zafar while talking to Dawn.

He said that the CDGR had invited the experts to give their proposals for the improvement. He said that the CDGR would select firms by end of this month and give the task to the firm to make the design in such a manner that the food street gave a reflection of Punjab culture.

“We don’t want to make a boring food street but it will be difficult for us to give it a traditional look like that of Lahore as it was established in old and beautiful buildings representing the local culture,” he said.

For the solution of parking space, he said that the CDGR would make the parking after receiving funds from Punjab government.

“The provincial government will provide Rs500 million under Large City Package next month and the CDGR has planned to reconstruct the double road and make parking space on both sides of the road,” he said.

He said that parking would be banned in the area of the food street and visitors would have to enter the street after parking their vehicles at the road sides. He said that the new parking would accommodate visitors to the food street.
