SWABI, Aug 17: The local tailors are charging more than the price of cloth for sewing a suit on urgent order as Eidul Fitr is just round the corner, it has been learnt.
Several people, who couldn’t buy cloths on time owing to different reasons, are running from pillar to post to get their Eid clothes tailored but tailors are reluctant to accept their orders.
They are told by the tailors that they would have to pay Rs900 to Rs1,000 per suit as urgent sewing charges.
“How can I tailor my clothes for Eid when tailors demand sewing charges equal to the price of the cloth,” said Abbas Khan, a student of Maneri village. He said that he gave up the idea of wearing new clothes on Eid after hearing the amount and returned home frustrated.
Similar views were expressed by Shakeel Khan, an unemployed youth of Topi city, and Obiad Khan, a student of a university.
Many other residents of the district, belonging to different walks of life, also complained about unprecedented raise in the ‘fees’ of tailors.
They said that the tailors were accepting even urgent orders without giving any surety that the clothes would be ready for Eid.
According to them, the tailors tell customers that their clothes will be tailored if they get time. “Sewing charges for ‘chance orders’ are between Rs900 and Rs1,000,” they said.
Several people told this scribe that prices of readymade garments and cloths increased manifold as compared to the previous year. They said that they were worried as to how they would buy new clothes and other items for their children, who turned down their each excuse, on the occasion of Eid.
Shafiq Ahmad, a tailor at Topi Bazaar, told Dawn that they were working day and night in the holy month of Ramazan but despite that they were not able to meet the orders placed with them earlier because all working activities were hit badly by power loadshedding. “The rush of people, who want to place orders, still continues,” he said.
