SC rejects FIA report on NICL case

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Friday resumed the hearing in the NICL corruption case, DawnNews reported.

A three-judge bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and including Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain was hearing the case regarding alleged corruption in the affairs of the National Insurance Company Limited.

During the hearing, the court rejected the Federal Investigation Agency’s report pertaining to the issue of the recovery of Rs 420 million submitted before the bench a day earlier.

Chief Justice Iftikhar in his remarks said that in violation of court orders, Waqar Haider had previously stopped the transfer of Zafar Qureshi, the former head of the FIA team investigating the scam who was later appointed the Inspector General Police Gilgit-Baltistan, adding that Haider now faced contempt of court action.

Qureshi’s allegations against Waqar Haider, Zulfiqar Ali

Earlier on 2011, Qureshi had leveled allegations against FIA’s Assistant Director Zulifqar Ali.

Summons were later issued by the FIA’s Special Investigation Unit for Haider and Zulifqar Ali on the allegations, a senior FIA official had told Dawn at the time.

Qureshi had also alleged that Haider and Ali had deliberately allowed defreezing of two bank accounts of the accused during the period of his suspension. He had recommended to the interior secretary and FIA director general that legal action should be taken against them for benefiting the accused.
