ISLAMABAD, Oct 2: The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted bail to former principal secretary Saeed Mehdi in the last pending case, promp-ting sobs from his family members present in the court room.
The three-judge bench, comprising Justice Mohammad Bashir Jehangiri, Justice Munir A. Sheikh and Justice Rana Bhagwandas, after hearing Advocate Wasim Sajjad, counsel for Saeed Mehdi, passed the order.
After the SC’s bail-granting order, Saeed Mehdi is likely to be released from Adiala jail on Wednesday as he has already been acquitted in two other cases.
The former top bureaucrat was arrested along with Mian Nawaz Sharif when the Muslim League government was toppled in bloodless coup d’etat on Oct 12, 1999.
Saeed Mehdi faced three cases including two corruption charges.
He was acquitted by the Anti-Terrorism Court in plane hijacking case as well as by the Accountability Court in assets case.
He is accused in the Polo Ground case along with Asif Ali Zardari and former chairman CDA, Shafi Shewani. The case is still pending.
The prosecution has alleged that Saeed Mehdi, in his capacity as chairman CDA, had sanctioned an amount of Rs1.6 million for the construction of Polo Ground in the Prime Minister House.
