KARACHI, July 28: Sindh High Court Chief Justice Mushir Alam said on Saturday that despite the revival of democracy in the country some circles were still conspiring against the supremacy of the Constitution.

Speaking at the launching ceremony of six-week training programmes for lawyers held at the Shuhada-i-Punjab Hall of the city courts, the CJ said that certain elements were still supporting the tradition of violating the Constitution through unconstitutional steps.

Maintaining that the judiciary, under the Constitution, had a right to play its role for the protection of fundamental rights and issues of the national interest, the provincial chief justice vowed that the judiciary would uphold the rule of law and supremacy of the Constitution.

He said that the judiciary, democracy and media had become independent because of the lawyers’ struggle and urged the legal fraternity to keep unity among their ranks and strengthen the independent judiciary.

He lauded the training programmes and said that they would not only help the lawyers to hone their professional skills but would also enable them to play their role more effectively in dispensing speedy justice to the masses.

Karachi Bar Association President Mahmoodul Hasan said that the training sessions were being arranged with the support of the law and justice commission of Pakistan and they would help around 14,000 members of the bar to develop their expertise.

He was of the view that training for judicial officers at judicial academies was insufficient and such sessions must also be conducted for judges.

He condemned the government for amending the contempt of court law and vowed to protect the independence of the judiciary at any cost.

He added that the legal community would continue its struggle for the implementation of the superior judiciary’s orders in letter and spirit.

KBA general-secretary Khalid Mumtaz also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the significance of the training sessions.
