KARACHI: A man was injured and some vehicles were damaged in a grenade attack near a department store in Gulshan-i-Iqbal near NIPA on Friday evening.

Police said that two men on a motorcycle lobbed a hand grenade near the store. A man was wounded and three cars parked were damaged in the grenade explosion.

The wounded was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment.

The store had been facing extortion threats in the past, the police said.

Policeman, suspect killed

A policeman and a suspect were killed in an encounter in the Manghopir area on Friday.

Police said that the shoot-out occurred in Kunwari Colony where Police Constable Mohammad Anwsr tried to stop two suspects on a motorcycle. However, they fired on the policeman. The policeman returned fire, leaving one of the suspects wounded, they added.

The suspects managed to escape into Kunwari Colony. The wounded police constable was taken to a private hospital where he died during treatment.

The police said that two and a half hours later the body of a man with a gunshot wound was brought to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital from the area. The man was identified as Khatib Khan Mehsud, said Manghopir SHO Chaudhry Bahsir.

He was the same man who had been hit by a bullet fired by the slain police constable, the area SHO added.
