Mariah Carey takes over at 'American Idol'

NEW YORK: Pop star Mariah Carey is taking over at the troubled TV talent show “American Idol” after Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and pop diva Jennifer Lopez quit as judges.

“It's gonna be so much fun working on @AmericanIdol. As a singer-songwriter, I'm excited to help find and nurture new talent,” Carey Tweeted.

“We are proud to have one of the world's greatest-ever female singers join our show,” Simon Fuller, the producer, told Fox, which broadcasts the contest.

“Mariah defines the word 'Idol' and will inspire every singer that has the honor of performing in front of her.” Lopez and Tyler announced earlier this month their departure from the show, which is struggling against rival “The Voice” on NBC.

“American Idol” has aired for 11 seasons, but was thrown into disarray by the departure of judges Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi two years ago.
