200 students to visit US

ISLAMABAD, July 18: As many as 200 undergraduate Pakistani students will attend classes in the United States colleges and universities as part of the ‘Global Undergraduate Programme.

A US embassy announcement says that 100 students will travel to the US in August and September for the fall-semester and the rest in January next.

The global graduate programme, an initiative of the US State Department, will send Pakistani students to over 50 campuses in the US where they will join classes along with the American students, to do public presentations on the culture and people of Pakistan, and be an active part of the local community they will be staying with.

Since 2010, approximately 500 Pakistani students have already benefited from the programme. —Our Reporter

Hospital lacks TT injection

TAXILA, July 18: The tehsil headquarters hospital (THQ), the only provincial government hospital which caters to the population of over 0.4 million, has run out of tetanus injections (TT) and X-ray films.

The hospital receives 99 per cent of accidents and fire arm victims but they are asked to visit private labs for X-ray.

When patients ask about tetanus injections they are told to purchase them from the market, Mohsin Tahir, a patient told this reporter.

He said the doctors denied the injection to the accident victims saying they are out of stock.

When contacted, Medical Superintendent THQ hospital Dr Muhammad Shahid said due to lack of funds hospital cannot provide X-ray facility to each and every patients.

He said that TT injection was available in the stock and he would launch a probe that why did the duty medical officer and dispenser deputed in emergency department not administer injection to patients.—Correspondent

Teenagers in voters’ list  

ISLAMABAD, July 19: The new computerised electoral rolls contain 1.58 million entries of youth who attained the age of 18 years from January 1 to June 15.

This was disclosed by Chairman National Database Registration Authority Tariq Malik while talking to Dawn on Tuesday. He said around 15,000 people on attaining the age of 18 were approaching Nadra on average per day.

In all 84.3 million eligible voters had been registered, he said adding the printing of electoral rolls of Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) had been completed.

He said the list for Sindh was also near completion. The work on printing electoral rolls of Punjab will start in next few days and the printing of the first ever error free computerized electoral rolls will be completed by the end of the current month.—Staff Reporter

Kohsar SHO transferred

ISLAMABAD, July 18: Senior Superintendent of police on Wednesday removed Kohsar police SHO from his current job and asked him to report to police lines headquarters, the sources said.

SSP Mohammad Yousuf Malik transferred inspector Fayaz Tanoli on the orders of Inspector General Bani Amin Khan.

The sources said that the IGP got the inspector removed from the post of SHO Kohsar through SSP as earlier in December 2011 he made three futile attempts to remove him from the post but each time Mr Tanoli got the orders cancelled using political clout.

A senior officer said that as SHO he had been served over a dozen show-cause notices for his negligence, misuse of power and other allegations but he did not respond to anyone of them. —Staff Reporter

Development package

GUJAR KHAN, July 18: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) announced prime minister’s development package for Gujar Khan city to the tune of Rs1 billion, it has been learnt.

Raja Tariq Kiani MPA and Raja Javaid Ashraf patron-in-chief of PPP Gujar Khan while speaking to a public gathering at Civil Club here on Tuesday night revealed the news of the unprecedented development package.

The amount, they said, would be used for the installation of 20 new tubewells for overcoming water shortage in the city, construction of Benazir Bhutto public park near Dungi dam and a ladies health club at Wapda’s land, reconstruction of Civil Club building, improvement of drainage system in the three union councils of the city, upgradation of sui gas supply system, establishment of an office of SNGPL in Gujar Khan city. They added that Rs70 million had been allocated for making the trauma centre in the city, operational.—Correspondent
