According to a press release issued here on Tuesday, non-food items worth over Rs26.5 million would be distributed among Afghan refugees.
The first consignment of the relief items left the SC (UK) and CRS godowns at Peshawar on Tuesday. The distribution will start in Bajaur and Kurram Agencies simultaneously on Wednesday.
The operation would cover approximately 6,800 families: 2,346 in Kotkai 1 & 2 camps and 807 in Bar Kalley camp in Bajaur; 1,093 in Old Bagzai Camp, 1,598 in Ashgaro 1 & 2 Camps and 995 in Basu Camp in Bajaur Agency.
The relief items include sweaters, woollen caps, and socks for children; and shawls, quilts, sleeping mats and water pots.
Save the Children had also implemented an emergency response programme both inside Afghanistan and in the neighbouring countries for internally- and externally-displaced Afghans last year focusing on health provision, child protection and on food and non-food items.
Save the Children (UK) work focussed on empowering refugee children to work for creating a conducive environment for themselves where their development needs can be met.
The agency was particularly successful in creating a model at Kotkai Afghan Refugees Camp in Bajaur Agency where children are participating in the camp management.
The SC (UK) facilitates children at the camp to reflect on their protection concerns, identify factors creating those concerns and then advocate with the camp management and relief agencies to obtain a response to those concerns.
Improved facilities in schools, change in teachers behaviour, check on corporal punishment, awareness against early child marriages are some of the achievements children have made through interaction with people running the camp.
