Ebrahim vows to prevent interference of undemocratic forces

KARACHI: Pakistan’s incumbent Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim is set to take oath of the office on July 20, DawnNews reported on Saturday.

Justice (retired) Ebrahim was recommended to the post of CEC by a parliamentary committee last week, following which Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and leader of opposition Chaudhry Nisar and the name was finally approved by President Asif Ali Zardari.

Ebrahim held talks with members of the election commission, who promised their “full support in holding free and fair elections by them.”

“We will try to curb excessive spending during the election period,” Ebrahim was quoted as saying by DawnNews.

The former governor of Sindh also vowed not to let any “undemocratic forces to interfere in the election process.”

Pakistan is expected to go to polls early next year, and the CEC designate said the country’s future relies on “free and fair elections.”

The oath-taking ceremony will be administered on Friday, July 20 and Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Mohammad Chuadhry will take oath from Ebrahim.
