ON retirement a pensioner had the option of getting half of his pension commuted for a specified period. The remaining half remained static for 15 years and restored thereafter in its original worth.

However, those who opted for full pension also drew increases thereon. This treatment created a big gap between the monthly pensions drawn by two pensioners. To remove this anomaly and to provide justice, the Lahore High Court, the Punjab Service Tribunal, the Federal Service Tribunal as also the Supreme Court decided that increases sanctioned during the commutation period should also be restored along with pension.

This decision is understood to have been implemented in some offices. But general orders from the finance division are still awaited.

The decision applies to those pensioners who are 75 years old or above. Their number is not considered to be large because of the average lifespan. I appeal to the chief justice to order implementation of the courts’ decisions.
