KARAK, July 4: Police on Wednesday seized a big quantity of mobile oil, which was being smuggled from Afghanistan to Peshawar and other parts of the country via Karak, officials said.
They said that following a tip-off district police officer Sajjad Khan asked circle officer Noor Mohammad Khattak to arrest the smugglers and recover mobile oil allegedly being smuggled to Peshawar.
Mr Khattak along with a police party stopped two trucks at Dheraki area of Banda Daud Shah tehsil and on search recovered 231 drums from each truck bearing numbers (T-037 and Z-7335).
The police said that the total quantity of oil was 46,200 litres, as each drum contained 200 litres of oil.
The police impounded the trucks and arrested two alleged smugglers identified as Noor Alam and Iftikhar, both residents ofMohmand Agency, and registered cases against them under sections 43/44 of Petroleum Act.
The accused were later shifted to an undisclosed location for investigations.
Sources claimed that the DPO sent a special police team from district headquarters to Banda Daud Shah, as SHOs of three police stations, including Gurguri, Teri and Banda Daud Shah, were least interested in foiling the smuggling attempt on Gurguri-Tall route.
The DPO awarded cash and commendation certificates to members of the raiding party, which thwarted the smuggling bid.
TRANSPORT FARES: Different social organisations here have demanded of the district administration to revise transport fares following recent decrease in oil and gas prices.
The demand was made by Chountra Welfare Organisation, Local Support Organisation of Mithakhel, and elders of Latamber and Ahmadabad in a joint meeting in Karak on Wednesday.
The representatives of the organisations, including Ishaq Khattak, Sabir Sadique and Sadiq Nawaz, said that transporters were fleecing commuters and the Regional Transport Authority had been favouring them by not revising fares according decrease in oil prices.
They threatened that if the RTA failed to revise fares within a week, they would organise protests to get their rights.
