KARACHI, June 29: Jamaat-i-Islami activists marched on M.A. Jinnah Road on Friday to show solidarity with the Muslims of Myanmar and condemn atrocities against them.
Carrying placards and banners, the activists shouted slogans for an end to what they described as a massacre of Muslims in the southeast Asian country. They also called upon the Pakistan government to raise the issue globally through diplomatic channels.
The rally began from the mausoleum of the Quaid-i-Azam after Friday prayers and ended at Al-Amna Square on M.A. Jinnah Road. The event, however, caused a massive hours-long traffic jam on several thoroughfares.
Speaking at the rally, JI leaders condemned the atrocities on religious grounds in Myanmar and termed the rally an attempt to draw the attention of the world community, the UN and the Organisation of Islamic Countries towards the issue. “If the OIC is alive and if Muslim rulers have any sense of honour left, they should try to stop the bloodshed of Arakan Muslims in Myanmar,” said Muhammad Hussain Mehanti, the city chief of the JI.
