DACCA: Three former Chief Ministers of East Pakistan Nurul Amin, Ataur Rahman Khan and Abu Husain Sarkar, former Central External Affairs Minister Hamidul Haq Chowdhury, former Provincial Minister Mujibur Rahman, and three other veteran politicians, Messrs Yusufali Chowdhury, Mahmud Ali and Mohsinuddin Ahmad have urged that steps be taken for the election of a special body as soon as possible to give the country a Constitution to make its acceptance unquestioned by the people.

In a joint statement issued here last night, the East Pakistan leaders have expressed the view that with all the materials on the subject, a suitable Constitution can be hammered in the course of six weeks at the most.

“The rule by Martial Law has at last ended. The door of progress towards a democratic system seems to be in the process of opening, but has yet to open fully. The Constitution promulgated by President Mohammad Ayub Khan only holds out a hope, but does not fulfil it.

“…The country can make real and abiding progress through the method of evolution and by changes peacefully brought about,” read the statement.—Agencies
