LAHORE, June 23: A constitutional petition has been filed in the Supreme Court’s Lahore registry seeking directives to newly-elected Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf to write a letter to Swiss authorities for reopening of cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.

Advocate Shahid Naseem Gondal in his petition filed through counsel A.K. Dogar said the SC in its judgment in the NRO case had asked the federal government to take immediate steps to seek revival of the cases pending in Switzerland.

The petitioner said the new premier should take immediate steps as ordered by the apex court. He recalled the then prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani had said that no PPP premier would ever write to Swiss authorities. Therefore, he said, Prime Minister Ashraf might not comply with the court’s directive.

He requested the court to ask the prime minister to write the letter to Swiss authorities immediately in compliance with Para 178 of the judgment.
