One-month ban on Sheesha smoking

LAHORE, June 16: The City District Government of Lahore administrator imposed on Saturday Section 144 under the Criminal Procedure Code-1898 on Sheesha smoking in all restaurants, clubs, hotels and cafes within its territorial and revenue limits, including the Defence Housing Authority (DHA), from June 16 to July 18.

“It appears the Sheesha smoking in Lahore district is increasing gradually which is not only injurious to public health but has also become a source of unethical and immoral activities.

Sheesha smoking promotes unhealthy activities among the people and thus create resentment among the general public, leading to disturb the public peace and tranquility,” read a notification issued on Saturday by CDGL Administrator/DCO Noorul Amin Mengal.

The notification said this order would remain in force in all parts of the Lahore city district from June 16 to July 18.

“In my opinion there are sufficient grounds to proceed under section 144 of the CrPC-1898 as an immediate prevention and speedy remedy is desirable and the direction hereinafter appearing are necessary to prevent disturbance of public peace and tranquility,” the notification quoting the DCO as having observed.

It says the DCO being administrator of the CDGL hereby prohibits Sheesha smoking in the city district revenue limits by exercising his powers vested to him under Section 144.

Similarly, the administrator has also imposed Section 144 on burning of wheat straws at brick kilns and keeping cattle within revenue limits of the city district.
