NAWABSHAH, June 16: Sixteen bonded labourers have been recovered from a farm and 40 from a brick kiln.

Police on the directive of court recovered 16 bonded labourers, including seven children, from a farm near Qazi Ahmed. The freed labourers belong to the Bheel community and had come to work at the farm from the village of Miyo Jaatar near Mithi in Tharparkar district.

Photo Bheel, a labourer, had fled from the captivity, approached a Hyderabad-based NGO and filed an application in the district and sessions court of Shaheed Benazirabad for the recovery of his family members.

He stated that a contractor, Gordhan Bheel, had brought them to Qazi Ahmed for work but they were not allowed to move.

Ms Seeta, a freed labourer, said the contractor had threatened to kill their children if they tried to escape.

The district and sessions judge directed police to recover the bonded labourers.

In another raid conducted under directives of the additional session judge-I, police recovered 40 bonded labourers from a kiln near Sakrand.

The raid was conducted on an application filed by Yousuf Shaikh who stated that his brother was working at the kiln for past seven months and was not allowed to leave the place and meet his family.
