ISLAMABAD, June 15: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has arrested the principal appraiser of customs, Sadar Amin Farooq, and a clearing agent, Wasif Shah (of Eastern Agency), in the multi-billion International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) containers scam, said a spokesman for the NAB on Friday.
The spokesman did not say when and how the main character behind the scam was arrested in Karachi.
The principal appraiser allegedly cleared most of the containers and remained on the post from 2001 to 2010.
On the directives of the Supreme Court, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) referred various complaints about the misuse of Afghan transit facility by unscrupulous clearing agents and others whereby the goods imported under the garb of Afghan Transit Trade did not cross the border but were disposed of in Pakistan.
The NAB initiated inquiries on the complaints and arrested six clearing agents on May 24 responsible for clearing 200 containers that never reached the destination.
The clearing agents arrested were Mohammad Rafiq, Abdul Manaf, Mehmood Alam, Irfan Haider Rizvi, Mohammad Irfan and Malik Ishtiaq Ahmed.
