LAHORE, June 14: Former law minister Babar Awan has said despite many differences he will support Supreme Court on the suo motu proceedings in Dr Arsalan-Malik Riaz scam.
Talking to the media at the Lahore High Court on Thursday, he also said it was very improper to demand resignation from Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry. It was the time for everyone to stand by the Supreme Court, he added.
Awan said he respected the CJP but personalities did not have permanent status as only institutions are permanent. He did not answer media queries on Dr Arsalan’s case, saying the matter was sub judice.
He claimed he was receiving anonymous life threats and demanded a probe into the matter to trace out real culprits hatching a ‘conspiracy’ against him. Asma Jahangir had also expressed similar concerns but law-enforcement agencies were paying no heed to her apprehensions.
He, however, said he was not afraid of such threats nor he would leave the country on this pretext as Allah the Almighty was his protector.
When asked to comment on Punjab Governor Sardar Latif Khan Khosa’s allegation that he (Awan) played role of a party traitor, Awanjust asked satirically, “Who is she.”
He said in 1996 many had left Benazir Bhutto alone and he was the only one to stand by her.
