ISLAMABAD, June 9: Although the restoration of 11 expelled students seems to have buried the hatchet between the management of Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) and its students, the real issues that proved a bone of contention are still to be resolved.
Among them are behavioral issues and faculty member are of the view that both students and the management should understand their responsibility and behave to avoid any such incident in future.
A faculty member of QAU said: “We cannot guarantee that in future, in case of any clash between the management and the students, issue will be resolved amicably.
“So both the stakeholders should try to avoid the situation which took place on April 27, when students protested for their rights and interrupted an international conference which was being held in the university”.
A student of the university who actively participated in the protests against the management said: “Management should understand that students are an essential part of the university and it is the duty of the management to solve the outstanding problems faced by them.
“We were demanding that water should be provided in the hostels. Although, we knew that it was the responsibility of Capital Development Authority (CDA) but the management of the university could have played its role by ensuring water supply through alternative means,” he said and added that at least it should have tried to arrange the commodity because that was how students would realise the management was working for their welfare.
A faculty member requesting not to be named said, “All the issues of the students should be resolved. Last year, the university was hit hard by power outages and the affected students were demanding that generators and UPS (uninterrupted power supply) units should be installed to resolve the issue.
“After a long struggle, however, the management finally agreed to get a connection from the Diplomatic Enclave and the students got relief,” he said and suggested “that is how the management should behave and the students should also understand that everything is not possible for the management as, even at their homes, parents cannot fulfill all their demands,” he said.
Another faculty member of the QAU said that in the university, management has been emphasising on seminars and workshops. It should also concentrate on organising extracurricular activities to control the students’ depression.
“All over the country, in Karachi University, Punjab University, Peshawar University, Numl and QAU, we have witnessed violence and it can only be addressed through inculcating a positive change in behavior,” he said.
Vice Chancellor QAU, Dr Masoom Yasinzai talking to Dawn said that not only the faculty members but also the students played a positive role to get the issue resolved and it was expected that in future too the environment of the university would remain peaceful.
“I am here to address and resolve the issues of the students and I will definitely try to provide them all facilities. We have also set up a students’ advisory council to address such issues in future,” he claimed.
