Man kills friend

TAXILA, June 7: A man killed his friend over allegedly assaulting him in the limits of Wah Cantonment police station on Thursday.

Police sources said Nazakat Ali had attempted to assault his friend Maqsood under different pretexts which annoyed him. On Wednesday evening, Maqsood spiked the tea he offered to Nazakat and when he fell unconscious, he strangulated him to death. Later, he threw his body at a deserted place. On getting clues during interrogation, police arrested Maqsood who confessed to the crime. — Correspondent

Gayari victim laid to rest

CHAKWAL, June 7: Lt Col Tanvirul Hassan who was buried along with 134 other soldiers under the avalanche at Gayari Sector on April 7 was laid to rest with full honour in his native village Waulah on Thursday.

Army officers, soldiers, local politicians and hundreds of other people attended the funeral prayer. Core Commander Siachen Lt Gen Abid Nazir laid the flower wreath on the grave of the martyred officer on behalf of Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and President Asif AliZardari. A smartly turned-out army contingent presented guard of honour to late Lt Col Tanvirul Hassan.

Talking to mediamen, the mother and brothers of Mr. Tanvir said that they were proud of him as he sacrificed his life for the sake of hisbeloved land. His wife vowed that her sons would also join Pakistan Army to serve the country.

Late Lt Col Tanvirul Hassan joined Pakistan Army as second lieutenant in 1992. Currently he was commanding Baloch Regiment at Gayari Sector.— Correspondent

13 outlaws arrested

ISLAMABAD, June 7: The capital police arrested 13 persons including three foreign women for their alleged involvement in immoral activities during raids at different guesthouses, a police spokesman said on Thursday.

Margalla police team led by SHO Inspector Muhammad Hussain Lasi raided a guesthouse on Neelam Road, Sector G-9/4, and arrested seven persons including two women for their alleged involvement in immoral activities.

Meanwhile, a Shalimar police team headed by Sub-Inspector Muhammad Shahbaz raided a guesthouse and nabbed six persons including a woman for their alleged involvement in immoral activities. Three nabbed women are foreigners who could not produce documents regarding their stay in country.

The Ramna police arrested a bootlegger after a recovery of four bottles of wine from him. Likewise, the Industrial Area police recovered nine bottles of wine from two bootleggers which led to their arrest. Similarly, the Nilor police intercepted person on suspicion and during his search recovered a 30-bore pistol.

Separate cases were registered against the arrestees and further investigations were in progress. — Staff Reporter

Iesco official caught red-handed

TAXILA, June 7: The crime circle of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) caught a revenue superintendent of the Iesco Taxila circle red-handed while taking gratification from a consumer, Iesco and FIA sources said.

A raiding team of the crime circle of the Federal Investigation Agency led by Inspector Ghulam Asghar raided the Customer Service Office (CSO) and arrested Iesco revenue superintendent Mohammad Saeed while taking Rs20,000 as bribe from Fayyaz Shah to reduce electricity bill of the tube well installed at his agricultural farm in Pind Bhahdur Khan near Fauji Cement Factory. The marked currency notes were recovered from his possession. The FIA registered a case and started investigation. — Correspondent

AJK hockey

MUZAFFARABAD, June 7: The Azad Jammu and Kashmir National Hockey Championship begins here on Friday in which eight teams are participating.

The five-day event would be played on the basis of Robin Round League, according to Farooq Ashraf Awan, secretary general AJK Hockey Association.

As the three newly carved districts were yet to constitute their own teams, the host district (Muzaffarabad) had been allowed to enter two teams, he said.

Mr Awan, who is himself a grade-1 national hockey umpire, said that national and international umpires would supervise the tournament in the University College Ground, Muzaffarabad.—Staff Correspondent
