Police blamed for illegally detaining couple

PESHAWAR, June 6: A resident of Sorizai Bala area in Peshawar has blamed police for torturing and keeping him in illegal confinement along with his wife for 12 hours at Taro Jabba police post for not having marriage certificate. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Inamullah Khan said that he along with his wife was coming on a motorcycle from his village to the house of his father-in-law in Taro Jabba on Tuesday when police intercepted him.

“When we stopped, police asked us to show marriage certificate. The in-charge of Taro police post, ASI Sartaj, started beating me when I told him that no one kept marriage certificate in his pocket,” he alleged.

Mr Khan said that he along with his wife was bundled in a police van and kept in habeas corpus for 12 hours. He said that police subjected him to severe torture for the simple reason that he didn’t possess marriage certificate at that time.

“The ASI also misbehaved with my wife and used very abusive language,” he alleged. He added that they were released when some close relatives and elders of the area came there and brought his marriage certificate with them.

Showing his blood stained clothes and wounds on his head and other parts of body, Mr Khan said that the ASI misused his official authority and mishandled two innocent citizens without any reason.

“I appeal to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Akbar Khan Hoti to take strict action against ASI Sirtaj Khan,” he said.
