Dr Afridi’s trial

Published June 2, 2012

THIS is apropos of A.S. Pingar’s letter ‘Dr Afridi’s trial’ (May 30) with which I agree as regards providing a trial under normal Pakistani law. However, there is a caveat: was Osama bin Laden (dubbed terrorist by Mr Pingar) not entitled to a trial by the US which espoused the principles of free trial, due process and human rights as enshrined in the American Constitution?

Was Mr Bush not liable to be prosecuted for war crimes in Iraq where no weapons of mass destruction were detected by the UN?

Is superpower empowered to forgo a common trial for Guantanamo prisoners?

The US thinks it has a carte blanche to kill Pakistani soldiers and Pakistani citizens in our sovereign territory, allow their detectives to kill citizens in Lahore (Raymond Davis is still at large) and become so benign to India that Dr Fai, an inveterate American of 20 years’ naturalization, was arrested and convicted even though there was no substantive evidence.

My American pals complain of anti-American sentiments among Pakistanis. They forget it was Pakistan which helped the US in ending Russian hegemony and defeating it in Afghanistan. In return, we got suicide attacks and imported terrorism.
