AS the law and order situation is deteriorating with each passing day, doctors are facing more and more risks. Every day a doctor here or a doctor there faces threats of extortion or kidnapping. Recently, Dr Aftab Qureshi, a prestigious name in the field of neurosurgery, was kidnapped. This has been causing a great loss to Dr Qureshi’s patients and students.
Several official reports have disclosed that gangs responsible for such kidnappings have high political affiliations. Even our police are part of this peril. That is why these atrocious activities are getting encouraged day by day. Although the provision of security to all citizens is the responsibility of the government, it seems to have miserably failed on this count. If the government can provide protocol and security to its ministers, it should also do so to protect doctors and others who are vital to society.
Many doctors have left for foreign countries in the presence of threats to their person. A time may come when it would be difficult to find a good doctor in the country. Kidnapping of Dr Qureshi is a highly condemnable and atrocious act. High officials should take immediate measures for his recovery, and the gangs responsible for kidnapping other major figures must be brought to justice.
