MQM man, two others shot dead

KARACHI, May 29: The ongoing wave of killings in the city claimed on Tuesday three more lives, including that of a Muttahida Qaumi Movement worker, only a day after nine people were found shot dead in different areas.

A gunny bag containing the body of an MQM activist was found on Northern Bypass near the Marwat Coach terminal, said an official at the Mauripur police station. Jamil Mubarak, 34, resident of Masroor Colony, Mauripur, had been kidnapped in front of his home by armed men riding two motorbikes, the official said.

He added the victim’s family informed the police about the incident. In the early morning, the police received information that a gunny bag was lying near the bus terminal. Subsequently, a team of police officials reached the spot and found the body of Mubarak in the gunny bag.

Mauripur SHO sub-inspector Mohammad Atif said the victim was trussed up before being shot to the head.

The SHO said Mubarak, father of two children, was an active worker of the MQM Baldia sector’s unit No 111 and employed at the Pakistan Post Office.

The police investigators suspected his political affiliation as the primary motive of his murder, but said investigation was under way to find the exact reason. “The victim belonged to the Kuchchi community.”

They said the killing could be linked to gang warfare in Lyari. An FIR (184/2012) was lodged at the Mauripur police station against Ashokalias chief and Nazeer alias Mechanic on a complaint of the victim’s brother, Aslam. The police said the nominated person was associated with the gang warfare in Lyari.

Following medico-legal formalities at the Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK), the body was handed over to the victim’s family.

Only a few hours later, another young man was found shot dead on Northern Bypass within the remit of the Mauripur police station.

Officials said the body of Khalid Qadir, 28, was spotted near Quetta Hotel and shifted to the CHK.

The victim, a resident of Baloch Mohalla in Shershah, had been missing since Monday, the Mauripur SHO said, adding that he was a labourer.

The police quoted doctors at the CHK as saying that the victim had sustained a gunshot wound to his head.

Later, an FIR (185/2012) was registered against unidentified men on behalf of the state.

A civilian employee of the Pakistan Navy was shot dead near new Sabzimandi on the Superhighway in the early hours of Tuesday, police said.

They added that Niaz Saeed, 38, a resident of Jangal Goth, Sohrab Goth, was on his way to work when he was intercepted by three men riding two motorbikes near the wholesale vegetables and fruit market.

He was shot thrice before the riders sped away, said an official at the Sohrab Goth police station.

The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities. Doctors were quoted as saying that the victim had sustained gunshot wounds to his head and chest.

The victim’s family took away his body after completing medico-legal formalities.
