‘SHO supporting hooligans’

CHITRAL, May 23: A number of women from Gobor village of Garam Chashma have demanded strict action against the area SHO for lending support to a hooligan who is bent upon snatching their lands from them.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, the affected women flanked by former councillor Muhammad Hussain said one Fayyaz Ahmed along with dozens of his accomplices armed with Kalashnikovs subjected women and children of the village to severe torture. They said the hooligans were fully backed by the SHO of Garam Chashma Abdul Qayum. Weeping while telling their tale of woes, the women recalled that the same person had also carried out an attack on the village last year but went unpunished which emboldened him to continue his hooliganism. —Correspondent

Sacked teachers on strike

CHITRAL, May 23: The hunger strike of the teachers sacked by the Aga Khan Education Service (AKES) entered third day here on Wednesday in Booni Chowk.

Twenty teachers of different high schools run by the AKES had been terminated from their services by the management on short notice of only one day. The terminated teachers included eleven male and nine females. The students of the schools have also lent their support to the striking teachers as they boycotted their classes demanding reinstatement of their teachers.

The teachers contended that the management was not authorised to terminate their services summarily without any prior notice of six months. —Correspondent

Development schemes

PESHAWAR, May 23: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Information and Public Relations Mian Iftikhar Hussain has directed heads of the concerned departments to ensure timely completion of the developmental works without any compromise on quality in Nowshera district.

He issued these directives while addressing a meeting of the heads of nation building departments and party office-bearers of PK-12 at Bacha Khan Markaz here on Wednesday. The participants criticised the performance of some departments during the meeting. The minister maintained that Rs1.5 billion had been distributed equally in all the union councils of his PK-12 constituency. He added each union council would get its due share in the upcoming ADP. —Bureau Report

Site for proposed varsity

KARAK, May 23: Three sites have been selected for establishing the proposed university in Karak district.

Commissioner Kohat Mohammad Anees visited the district on Wednesday to select a site for the proposed Khushal Khan Khattak University. He said that practical work on the project would start after finalisation of the site.

The three sites are located in the Karak township scheme near Karak sub-jail, industrial estate on the Indus Highway and Sabirabad. The commissioner said he would forward the three proposed sites to the government. He also paid visit to the sub-jail Karak and the district secretariat.

Meanwhile, a man was knocked down by a speeding car on the Indus Highway near Ahmadwala on Wednesday. The victim was identified as Yaseen Khan. —Correspondent

Wheat smuggling bid foiled

NOWSHERA, May 23:  The police seized 250 bags of wheat flour being smuggled out from the Jalozai IDP camp here on Wednesday.

Official sources said that a truck (C-8516) was on way to Punjab from Jalozai camp when it was intercepted by Azakhel police on G.T. Road. Police said the driver tried to escape, but was arrested. He was identified as Ismael Khan, resident of Khudrazi, Pabbi. The police recovered 250 bags of 50 kilogram from the truck which carried stamp of an international NGO. The police registered the case and started investigation. —Correspondent

Strengthening levies force

KHAR, May 23: Political Agent, Bajaur Agency, Jabar Shah has said the administration plans to recruit tribal youths in the levies force to strengthen the security apparatus in the tribal region.

Talking to reporters during his visit to the headquarters of Bajaur Levies here on Wednesday, the political agent said the levies force would be provided with basic training and modern weapons to improve its efficiency.

“The levies force has played a vital role as frontline fighters against the militants and in restoration of peace and writ of the government in the region,” he said. —Correspondent

Cricket tournament concludes

KOHAT, May 23: A friendly cricket tournament of local teams of Darra Adamkhel and FR Kohat to promote peace and healthy activities ended here on Wednesday.

The Jawaki team clinched the trophy by defeating the Shpalkiwal team by three wickets in the final match. The tournament was organised by the Fata secretariat and political administration of Darra Adamkhel. The Kohat DCO, who was the chief guest, said restoration of complete peace and tranquility was possible only with the help of tribesmen. —Correspondent

Nato supply reopening

PESHAWAR, May 23: The activists of Pasban on Wednesday held a protest rally at Sher Shah Suri Road against the government for its ‘pro-US’ policies and warned to react strongly if the Nato supplies were restored.

The protesters were holding banners and placards inscribed with anti-US and anti-Nato slogans. They also shouted slogans against the killing of innocent people in Fata and other parts of the country. Speaking on the occasion, Pasban Peshawar president Mohammad Khan said the government had decided to restore the Nato supply despite opposition from the masses. — Bureau Report
