SRINAGAR, May 23: An Indian army helicopter crashed on a glacier battlefield high in the Himalayas, killing the pilot and injuring another person, an official in Indian-held Kashmir said on Wednesday.

Army spokesman Lt-Col J.S. Brar said the Indian Cheetah helicopter crashed on Wednesday in Siachen glacier, at the northern tip of the disputed Kashmir region.

The glacier is known as the world’s highest battleground. Thousands of troops have been stationed there since 1984.

More troops have died from the gruelling conditions than from hostile fire. Mr Brar said the army had ordered a probe into the crash.—AP
