THIS is with reference to Major (Rtd) Saeeduzzaman Janjua’s letter in which he has commented on Asma Jahangir’s article (April 24). The writer rightly suggests that the tenure to remain in power for a political party should be reduced to four years from five. He also writes that a referendum should be held after every three years of governance by a political party to endorse satisfaction regarding the performance of a government or otherwise.
However, Mr Janjua’s suggestion that a member of an assembly should have no room for being elected for the third tenure is incomprehensible.
No doubt Mr Janjua, like other Pakistanis, seems to be fully unsatisfied with the performance of past and present members of assemblies but the fact related to the political and democratic system is that it matures with time.
Those politicians, who do a bit well, also embark on the path of corruption and other illegal businesses, having no consideration for the common man’s interests. It is better that they do not go to people’s doorsteps for collecting votes as they would get none this time.
