LAHORE, Dec 11: The central parliamentary board of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) has issued the Senate ticket on the general seat from Punjab to Allama Sibtain Kazmi.

Mr Kazmi is the secretary-general of Islami Tehrik Pakistan, which is a constituent of the MMA. He called on central Majlis leader Liaquat Baloch here on Wednesday.

The two leaders were of the view that the MMA should hold talks with the PML-Q, the PML-N and the PPP for support on the general seat in return for the MMA support for these parties’ candidates on the seats for women and technocrats. Meanwhile, the selection of candidates for the two Punjab Assembly seats vacated by the PML-N MNAs in Lahore has been narrowed down to Jamaat-i-Islami information-secretary Amirul Azeem, Lahore JI Amir Mian Maqsood and Hafeez Ahmad.

The candidates will be finalized within a couple of days.

MMA leaders: The PML-Q and the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal discussed possibilities of cooperation for Senate elections and the Punjab and National Assembly by-election when an MMA team called on Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Ellahi here on Wednesday.

The MMA delegation comprised MNAs Liaquat Baloch, Farid Piracha and Hafiz Salman Butt and MPAs Ehsanullah Waqas and Chaudhry Mohammad Shaukat.

Mr Pervaiz told them that cooperation with the MMA for Senate and by-polls topped the PML-Q list of priorities.

The delegation also apprised him of the problems being faced by doctors, teachers and students due to privatization of educational institutions, appointment of boards of governors and amendments to the University Act.

They were of the view that these issues must be discussed in the assemblies.
