MOSCOW: A Moscow court on Thursday sentenced one of the leaders of recent opposition protests, Ilya Yashin, to 10 days in jail for disobeying police at an unsanctioned rally in central Moscow.

“Well, that’s it, my friends. 10 days under arrest,” the prominent activist from the opposition Solidarity movement wrote on Twitter. “I’ll see you soon. Don’t slow down. We’ll still win.” Yashin, 28, was detained on Wednesday evening along with around 30 other activists at a sit-in in a square close to the United States embassy. The protesters had moved there on Wednesday morning after police enforced a court order to close down an eight-day protest in a leafy boulevard following complaints from residents.—AFP
