HYDERABAD, May 17: A human rights lawyer has alleged that he is being threatened with dire consequences by a landlord after he resisted his atrocities against small farmers of Tando Allahyar.

Ali Ahmed Palh said that he had even stopped sending his children to school out of fear and added that if any harm came to him or his family, the landlord Ghulam Qadir Mari would be held responsible.

Addressing a news conference at the local press club, Mr Palh, who runs an NGO — Rights Now Pakistan — said that following a rally against the landlord in Tando Allahyar on May 8, he was implicated in a false case by police.

He said that he had obtained pre-arrest bail in this case and apprehended that more such false FIRs could be lodged against him and his family members.

He said that Mari holds influence over Tando Allahyar administration which was reflective from registration of FIR against him. He added that officials, who refuse to obey Mr Mari, are transferred.

He said that four to five of Mr Mari’s relatives, including Yusuf Mari, Anwar Mari and Basheer Mari, had been employed in the irrigation department on lower posts but during harvesting of wheat, they act like Darogha and demand bribe in cash and kind.

These people, he added, extort money from farmers for providing water to their land. If they don’t pay money, they are implicated in false cases, the lawyer added.
