PESHAWAR, May 14: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Barrister Masood Kausar has said that the whole society should struggle jointly to get rid of terrorism and promote educational and sports activities.
“This is also must to get a respectable status among the comity of the nations where the level of tolerance among citizens of a country is considered a major quality,” he told a ceremony organised by Sports Writers Association at Governor’s House here on Monday.
The governor said that it was his desire to provide sufficient space for sports activities to each educational institution, even a primary school. “I am making every effort for making this possible,” he added.
On the occasion, the governor honoured two members of National Cricket Team, Junaid Khan and Yasir Shah, for their achievements in the field of sports.
He said that ensuring development of balanced society was based on constructive civic and cultural norms. He said that both academic and co-curricular activities should be given equal importance to ensure physical and mental development of individuals in a society.
Members of National Squash Team, Farhan Mahboob, Farhan Zaman and Nasir Iqbal, along with their coach Jamshed Gul were also present on the occasion. The squash team had won Asian Squash Championship that was recently held in Kuwait.
The governor gave away shields and cash award of Rs25,000 to each member of the squash team.
The members of two cricket teams, one each of boys and girls, representing Khyber Agency also attended the ceremony on a special invitation.
Mr Kausar said that knowledge was power and it had no boundaries. “To enable our youth to get fruits of it to the optimum level, the government is taking every possible step for balanced development of facilities both for promotion of curricular as well as co-curricular activities,” he added.
He said that a sports complex would be established in Khyber Agency. “It will offer latest sports facilities in all respective disciplines,” he added.
The governor said that the project was part of a vast programme under which both cultural and sports facilities were being developed in all tribal agencies.
Appreciating the Sports Writers Association for arranging the ceremony, Mr Kausar said that the practice should be continued.
Earlier, Amjad Aziz Malik, president of the association, lauded national heroes in the field of sports. “Inclusion of Junaid Khan and Yasir Shah, both hailing from a small village of district Swabi, in the national team is indeed a great honour for the people of the region,” he said.
Two representatives of the association, one each from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Fata, also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the scope for promotion of sports activities as well as the achievements of Sports Writers Association in that connection.
