Forget captaincy aspirations, Waqar tells 'seniors'

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan national cricket team’s former coach Waqar Younis said on Monday that the selection of Mohammad Hafeez as captain was the right choice by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and he should be supported by the other players as well.

The legendary pacer said that giving him the captaincy was a good move by the PCB.

“I hope that Hafeez gets the support of all the players in the team and the squad, particularly the senior players,” Waqar told PakPassion.net.

He added that all the players who were hoping to get the captaincy should forget about it now and work together as a unit with Hafeez.

Waqar also said that the selectors have been very diplomatic in their approach to the selection of the squads for Sri Lanka.

Waqar, who took 789 international wickets in an illustrious career, said inclusions of Yasir Arafat and Sohail Tanvir in the squad was surprising.

“When Yasir was bowling well he was not being selected, now suddenly out of the blue Yasir is selected for the Twenty20 squad. Both Yasir Arafat and Sohail Tanvir have passed their peak and yet have been selected this time around,” he pointed out.

Waqar said Faisal Iqbal is another surprise, included in the squad just to please the various regional administrations.

“Why not pick a youngster rather than a veteran who has had many chances to perform. I see some players who I feel should not be included in the squad, but have been done so just to keep the various regional administrations happy. The selectors just seem to have obliged to the regions, rather than picking the best group of players for each format,” Waqar said.
