KARACHI: Pakistan may finally get a chance to have representation in the Champions League Twenty20 (CL T20), after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said it has no objection to its neighbouring country’s participation in the tournament.
Following a BCCI meeting on Saturday, its president N Srinivasan said the board would recommend to the CLT20 governing body to invite Pakistan to the tournament.
“As far as inviting a Pakistani team is concerned, it will be done by the Governing Council. The BCCI will make the recommendation to the Governing Council which will decide on the matter,” Srinivasan was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
The cricket boards of Australia, India and South Africa own and the tournament, which is being held each year since 2009. Top domestic Twenty20 teams from all Test-playing nations, except Pakistan, have been participating in the event.
In 2008, when the tournament was set to hold its first edition, Pakistan was expected to be represented by Sialkot Stallions. However, with the fall-out of relations between Pakistan and India following the November 26 Mumbai attacks, the Stallions were unable to participate.
The latest move by the BCCI comes a month after Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, who was on a private visit to New Delhi, urged Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to consider reviving cricket ties.
Srinivasan, asked if this was the first step towards reviving relations with Pakistan, said: “Today, the decision is limited to the Champions League. I don't want to say anything beyond it.”
The Sialkot team, who have won the domestic Twenty20 tournament on a record seven occasions, expressed interest in being part of the CLT20 after winning the Super 8 T20 tournament last month.
