KARACHI, May 8: Burma Mohammadan (Korangi) defied all odds to beat favourites Karachi United FC in the final of the ninth UBL Omni Karachi United Football League (KUFL) 2011-12 at the Baloch Mujahid Stadium here the other day.
Burma Mohammadan were crowned KUFL champions after a gruelling penalty shootout as the match finished with 0-0 score line after a total of 120 minutes.
Karachi United did win a penalty during the regular time but their star player Rehan Munir’s kick was expertly saved by Burma Mohammadan’s captain and ex-KPT goalkeeper Abdul Ghani.
In the shootout, Burma Mohammadan kept their nerve to walk away with a 4-2 win to be crowned KUFL champions for the first time.
Earlier, Kalri Star (Lyari) finished third after a 1-0 win over Korangi Baloch (Sharafi) thanks to Gul Sher’s lone goal.
The matches were supervised by referees Javed Bangash, Habibullah, Babar Khan, Ibrar Hussain, Saeed Khan and Mohammad Kamran with Abdul Karim as the match commissioner.
The KUFL saw a total of 122 matches played (90 matches featuring two groups of 10 teams, followed by an eight-team super league round with a further 28 matches, and four games in the knockout round). A total of 379 goals were scored with 15 hat-tricks including two from Rehan Munir.
Burma Mohammadan pocketed Rs100,000 along with the winners’ trophy, Karachi United got Rs50,000 and the runners-up trophy and Kalri Star got Rs20,000 and the third-place trophy.
Burma Mohammadan’s star player Mohammad Jaffar won the Rs10,000 Best Player award, Rehan Munir got the Rs10,000 Top Scorer award after scoring 17 goals.
Former KUFL champs Baloch Youth FC (Garden) won the Rs10,000 Fair Play Trophy.
Karachi United’s Adeel Rizki and Mohammad Shahzad won the respective Best Coach and Best Goalkeeper prizes.
Abdul Karim won Best Match Commissioner, Saeed Khan Best Referee, Babar Khan Best Assistant Referee and Zain ul Abideen (Korangi Baloch) the Emerging Player awards.
