Zohaib’s composure

Not matter how hard we try not to comment on the inanities that TV shows keep brimming with, something or the other compels us to share what’s happening on that front.

Last week pop singer Zohaib Hasan was on one such programme hosted by a TV actor whose name we should not mention because he is already irked by his country’s media (ironic, since he himself is a part of it). For the most part of the interview he kept pestering Zohaib H with questions like “why does our media show Indian content?” and “why can’t we promote our own talent?” etc. Zohaib H responded to the queries in a very composed and calm manner, trying to make him understand that that’s not always the case.

Then the anchor told the singer that he (Zohaib) had been in the country for two weeks yet no media outlet ran that news. To which Zohaib H replied that he was on TV at that moment giving an interview to the actor (besides, the pop star is a Pakistani and is more often than not found in his own country).

After such an intense session, the host shifted gears and asked a question about Zohaib’s legendary sister and singer, the late Nazia Hasan. The question was: how much time did you spend with your sister (Aap ne kitna waqt guzara unn ke saath?) or something to that effect. Boy o boy, these morning show hosts! Hello, Zohaib H was/is Nazia’s brother. Obviously they were together most of the time. After so much of media-bashing, this is the question that the morning show anchor came up with! And yet he had the cheek to question Pakistani media’s understanding of issues.
