LAHORE, Dec 8: The Punjab University will shift its department of sport sciences and physical education to the New Campus from the Old Hailey College building.
The university authorities are introducing the College of Banking and Finance Management (CBFM) at the premises of the Old Hailey College.
The department of sport sciences and physical education was established in 2001. It has been training its male students at neighbouring University Ground and female students’ at an adjacent girl’s college. It has only two lecture halls and a library.
At the New Campus, the department would have facilities like gymnasium, swimming pool and laboratories, which it was lacking at the present location, the university authorities believe.
Department of sport sciences and physical education chairman and director Prof Dr Muhammad Asghar Javed told Dawn that the shifting schedule would be decided during a meeting with the vice-chancellor this month.
He claimed that despite lack of facilities the department was competing with other colleges of physical education.
The chairman said land was required to establish a sport department with a swimming pool, modern laboratory, gymnasium and other sports facilities in it. “We need a full-fledged sport department with all required modern facilities”. The department was also changing its syllabi, he added.
Hailey College of Commerce principal Prof Nazir Ahmed Chaudhry said the CBFM certainly needed more space therefore, the shifting of the department of sports sciences and physical education was imminent.
The department has been offering post-graduate and PhD programmes in sports sciences and physical education on regular and self-supporting basis.
