Another wall of Mohenjodaro falls

LARKANA, March 10: A part of another reinforced wall of Mohenjodaro caved in on Saturday, while a similar incident took place on Tuesday and a Technical Committee of the Culture Department was yet to visit the first site of incident.

The damaged wall is situated in the first street of DK-G area.

Curator of Mohenjodaro Irshad Ridd told Dawn that around 10 feet wall had fallen down and the matter reported to SecretaryCulture Abdul Aziz Uqaili.

The damaged portion is not an original wall of the pre-historic ruins but a part of the conservation work carried out in 1997 by the Mohenjodaro Conservation Cell, a subsidy of UNDP.

Attributing the collapse to salinity, he said salt contents in walls squeeze with the rise in temperature creating cavities because of gas emission which result in such incidents.

“Many walls have developed cracks and appear to have bulged,” sources at the site said. They called for taking urgent steps to ensure already cracked walls do not collapse.
