HYDERABAD, Dec 2: Some poor women, belonging to three villages of the union council-4, Qasimabad, staged a demonstration outside the press club here on Monday.

They were protesting against the alleged malpractices of the chairmen of the district and the local Zakat committees.

Speaking on the occasion, a member of the UC-4, Yasmeen Mallah, accused the officials of the Zakat committees of favouritism, saying that they were defying the basic philosophy of Zakat, which was to extend financial help to the deserving people.

The protesting women urged higher authorities to take urgent notice of the malpractices of the two chairmen and ensure that the Zakat was distributed fairly among the deserving people.

They threatened to stage a hunger strike if this was not done promptly.

AIDS: Noted physician, Dr Asif Memon, has said that 150 AIDS cases have been registered in Sindh but there may be many other cases which have gone unreported.
