SWABI, Feb 20: About 35 research projects, majority of them on energy problem, were displayed at a three-day science fair, which concluded at the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology here on Monday.

Dr Shaukat Hameed Khan, executive director of Society for the Promotion of Engineering Sciences and Technology in Pakistan (Soprest), was the chief guest at the concluding ceremony. The fair was organised by the GIK Institute’s Science Society.

A group of the students who displayed a project ‘chief source of generating electricity’ said to solve the energy problem they had made a device in which dynamo was used.

They said they would fix the device on roads so when the vehicles passed the arrangement in the device would get pressed due to which the dynamo would generate electricity, which could be used for different purposes. They said they had been working on the project for the last two years.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Shaukat Hameed, who retired from Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission as chief scientist in 2005, lauded the efforts of the students. “I don't want to talk about the winners and losers. I simply say that today each group of students who participated inthe fair was the winner because every one had a vision and strived to continue his research. All of them are highly motivated and energetic. Their approach is tremendous,” said Dr Shaukat, who founded the laser programme in Pakistan.

The fair was divided in college and university level competitions. The college level competition was won by Beaconhouse Defence Campus, Lahore, while ICMS College System, Peshawar stood second and the third position went to Saint Mary's Academy, Rawalpindi.

Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi grabbed first position in the university level competition, Government College University, Lahore won second prize and third prize was won by University of Science and Technology, Taxila. Dr Shaukat gave away shields and trophies to the outstanding students.—Correspondent
