LAHORE, Feb 18: The Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) on Saturday launched a campaign to create awareness among Lahorites about the new solid waste management services it would be starting in the city in collaboration with Turkish contractors.

Covering 150,000 households, the new system would be implemented in 16 union councils of Gulberg and Data Gunj Bakhsh Town administrations during the first month of its launch.

The UCs would be Anarkali, Gowalmandi, Bibi Pak Daman, Bilal Gunj, Karim Park, Sarai Sultan, Sanda Kalan and Sanda Khurd, Kasurpura, Babu Sabu, Siddiqia Colony, Qilla Gujjar Singh, Rivaz Garden, Mozang, Islamia Park, Jinnah Hall, Race Course, Shadman, Mominpura, Chohan Park and Naseerabad.

The campaign was launched with painting of a butterfly, symbolising the Pak-Turk friendship, by students of Punjab University's Department of Art and Design at the Government College of Technology for Women and Vocational Institute, Lytton Road. Socio-economic Rehabilitation and Vocational Education president Begum Shaista Pervaiz Malik was the chief guest on the occasion and she appreciated the efforts of the young artists who participated in the activity.

In all, slogans and sketches were written and drawn on 32 walls in the 16 union councils to familiarise the citizens with the new solid waste management services, aimed at transforming Lahore into a more beautiful and waste-free city.

Leaflets containing material to sensitise the citizens about their role for successful implementation of the project were also distributed at Regal Chowk, Garhi Shahu on Allama Iqbal Road, Lakshmi Chowk, Jain Mandir, near Governor's House, Beadon Road, The Mall, Shadman, China Chowk, Bhatti Chowk, Shimla Pahari Chowk, Bilal Gunj Chowk and major mosques in these areas.

Meanwhile, a LWMC spokesperson said that under the new system customised waste bags would be supplied to all residents of the targeted areas. The waste bags would be collected from houses, offices and shops on daily basis. Some 5,000 new and covered containers would be placed in all areas with efficient arrangements for emptying of the same.

Washing and cleaning of roads would be carried out through automatic machinery on daily basis while that of underpasses, main squares and green belts weekly, said the spokesperson. - Staff Reporter
