LAHORE, Jan 30: Akram Sahi, a candidate for the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA)’s presidency, revealed a six-man list from which he would pick the individual to contest the secretary post from his faction.

The elections of the POA are scheduled to be held on Saturday (Feb 4).

“Former squash player Qamar Zaman, Nadeem Sindhu, Zia-ul-Hasan, Col (retd) Qaiser, Col (retd) Zafar and Maj (retd) Afzal are all suitable candidates for the post of secretary but I will announce the selected name at the appropriate time,” Sahi announced at a news conference on Monday.

The other two contestants, Gen (retd) Arif Hasan and Qasim Zia, who are also running for the post of president, have named Khalid Mahmood of Wapda and Khawaja Farooq Saeed of the Pakistan Gymnastics Federation as their secretary candidate respectively.

Akram also clarified there was no ban on Col Zafar imposed by the Athletics Federation of Pakistan.

“We have the talent in abundance in every walk of life and there is a need to turn it into a force,” he said.

Sahi said his main manifesto was to introduce sports culture in the country and to motivate the national sports federations to win medals, while claiming he had comfortable majority of votes to win the election.

He said he would change the system if he is elected and get the national sports federation rid of corrupt individuals.

Sahi added he would focus to promote sports in women and youth.

Asked his secretary Khalid Mahmood had joined the group of Arif Hasan, he said everyone was free to contest the elections from any platform.
